This genuine stoneware cup set \u00bbBrutal & Beuys\u00ab is hand-thrown by one of the last family-run stoneware ceramic manufacturers in Germany. This stoneware cup set is fired with 1300 \u00b0C and therefore dishwasher-safe. Like all other REH (GERMANY) ceramics these ceramic cups are certified food-safe, making it perfect for the use in gastronomy, hotels, offices, ateliers or simply in everyday life at home.<\/p>\n

The \u00bbBrutal\u00ab cup is entirely glazed with a purist, grey-green glaze, reminiscent of the natural colour of lichen on trees or the colouration of raw concrete, which is why the cup is named \u00bbBrutal\u00ab, in reference to brutalist architectural buildings.<\/p>\n

The \u00bbBeuys\u00ab cup is glazed inside and left unglazed on the outside for a puristic, raw aesthetic, which will will get a gentle patina over time. The raw unglazed finish is a tribute to the pioneering German artist Joseph \u00bbBeuys\u00ab, who used raw, natural materials and actions to advocate for an expanded concept of art. He aimed to collectively address the ecological crisis by non-dualistic ways of thinking, in order to align with our true purpose in life, the preservation of nature, our source.<\/p>\n

Design Concept<\/b><\/h3>\n

This stoneware ceramic cup set is part of the grey and unglazed \u00bbSingular\u00ab tableware collection designed in 2021, which emerged out of the black and white ceramic collection \u00bbPolar\u00ab from 2015. All ceramics are designed to be mixed with each other in every day life.<\/p>\n

The black and white ceramics of the \u00bbPolar\u00ab collection embody opposing poles and represent difference and dualism. While the REH (GERMANY) \u00bbSingular\u00ab Collection with its grey and unglazed stoneware ceramics stand for variety, equality, and diversity. An essential aspect of modern life seems to be our tendency towards the \u00bbhaving-mode\u00ab, dwelling in competitive and divisive thinking (Erich Fromm).<\/p>\n

But what is crucial is the \u00bbin-between\u00ab, such as the so-called \u00bbbeing-mode\u00ab in which we can celebrate our commonalities. In all cultures, this often occurs when people come together to eat and drink. The integration of black, white, and grey ceramics into everyday life is, therefore, a playful but also artistic representation of holism.<\/p>\n

For me, high-quality, durable, and therefore valuable everyday objects are not only timeless companions, but also modern tools that can encourage us to consume less and more locally, guiding us towards a way of life oriented towards being. After all, who wouldn\u2019t prefer spending much more time with themselves, friends, and family instead of dedicating their life to work for excess consumption?<\/p>\n

While our ceramic collections seem homogeneous at first, each piece is singular with subtle unique differences, influenced by factors such as hand-thrown production on the potter’s wheel, glazing, shrinkage during the drying processes, and the varying heat temperatures depending on the oven placement during the double-firing process.<\/p>\n

Using hand-thrown stoneware embodies the idea of a connection between an artist and a community, a link with other people rather than with factories, machines or corporations.
